The Alpine Tradition

What Is the Eisstock Game?

Eisstockschießen - commonly known as Eisstock or Bavarian Curling - is one of the oldest winter sports in the Alpine region. Originating in the 16th century in Bavaria and Austria, the game was traditionally played on frozen lakes and rivers during winter months.

Players slide a heavy stock (a handled disc, typically 4–6 kg) across an ice surface, aiming to land as close as possible to a target marker called the Daube. It combines precision, strategy, and social interaction - making it accessible and engaging for all ages and skill levels.

Today, Eisstock is played competitively in leagues across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, and recreationally at corporate events, festivals, resorts, and public venues worldwide. With a Glice synthetic ice surface, the game is no longer limited to winter or frozen lakes - it can be played anywhere, any time of year.

Why Glice Eisstock Rinks Are Becoming Increasingly Popular

Easy to Learn, Fun for Everyone

Eisstock is one of the few group activities where an eight-year-old and an eighty-year-old can play the same game and both have fun. No skating skill, no fitness threshold, no learning curve — guests are competitive within their first round, regardless of age or ability.

Team Building Without the Risk

The activity corporate organizers have been searching for: social, low-stakes, photogenic, and fully compatible with business attire. Teams that would never agree to go-karting or hockey will happily play Eisstock — and remember the day for the right reasons.

Turn Dwell Time Into Revenue

Games last long enough to drive food and beverage spend, but short enough to rotate groups through. Lanes attract spectators almost as much as players. For any operator monetizing time on premises — restaurants, beer gardens, hotels, markets — the commercial profile is unusually favorable.

Bring Alpine Charm to Any Venue

Eisstock carries the unmistakable atmosphere of an Alpine winter evening: lanterns, laughter, Glühwein, friends gathered around a lane. The sport is being re-embraced across Bavaria, Tyrol, and Switzerland as part of a wider return to regional heritage — and venues that offer it tap directly into that cultural current.

The Equipment

Anatomy of an Ice Stock

Three components, one precision tool, one target. Every Glice Eisstock is engineered for consistent slide, balanced weight, and easy grip.

Eisstock (Ice Stock) with handle, stock body, running plate and Daube target
Stock Body The main weighted section of the stock.
Running Plate The bottom surface that contacts the ice.
Handle The upper part held by the player to throw or “swing” the stock.
Target (Daube) The target marker placed at the far end of the rink. Get your stock as close as possible.

How to Play

Eisstock Game Rules

Setup

  • 1. Place the target marker (Daube) at the far end of the playing surface.
  • 2. Divide players into two teams (2–4 players per team).
  • 3. Each team receives Eisstock pieces in their team colour.

Gameplay

  • 1. Teams take turns sliding their Eisstock towards the Daube.
  • 2. You may knock opponents' pieces away from the target.
  • 3. The team with the piece closest to the Daube scores points.

Scoring

  • Only the team closest to the Daube scores in each round.
  • 1 point for each piece closer than the opponent's closest piece.
  • First team to reach an agreed point total (typically 15 or 20) wins.

Eisstock. Without Ice.

Solid polymer, not ice.The Glice Eisstock surface is a dry, solid playing field made from engineered polymer panels - no water, no refrigeration, no electricity required. Panels are ambient temperature and never melt.
Independently tested sliding performance.Fraunhofer Institute testing confirmed that Glice polymer surfaces achieve low-friction glide performance - delivering consistent and predictable Eisstock sliding behaviour.
Self-lubricating surface.Sintered panels release fresh lubricant as Eisstock pieces slide across the surface - the more you play, the better it performs.
Tongue-and-groove connection.Panels interlock like parquet flooring - precision-machined joints create a seamless playing surface. Seams are 100% flush, ensuring consistent Eisstock slides.
Install anywhere, no permits required.Panels lay directly on concrete, asphalt, event flooring, or grass (with sub-floor). No anchoring, no drilling, no construction permits. Premium panels last 10+ years per side and are reversible.
Compact storage, rapid setup. The modular system sets up in hours and stores flat when not in use - ideal for seasonal activations, event rotations, or permanent installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eisstock - also called Eisstockschießen, Bavarian Curling, or Ice Stock Sport - is a traditional Alpine sliding game with roots in 16th-century Bavaria and Austria. Players slide a weighted Eisstock across a rink surface, aiming to land closest to a target called the Daube. Today, Eisstock is played competitively and recreationally across Europe - and with a Glice synthetic ice Eisstock rink, the game can be played year-round at any venue without refrigeration or real ice.
A complete Eisstock equipment set includes the Eisstock stones (also called Ice Stocks - weighted discs with handles, typically 4-6 kg each), a Daube (the target marker), and the playing surface. Each Eisstock consists of three parts: the handle (grip for aiming and release), the stock body (the weighted base that controls momentum), and the running plate (the smooth bottom surface that slides on the rink). No skates or special footwear are needed - players play Eisstock in normal shoes. Glice supplies professional-grade Eisstock equipment as part of every rink package.
Eisstock rules are simple: two teams take turns sliding their Eisstock stones down the rink toward the Daube (target). The team with the stock closest to the Daube after all stocks are played scores points. Knocking opponents' stocks away is part of the strategy. A full game typically consists of 6 rounds (Kehren). The rules can be learned in under 2 minutes, making Eisstock one of the most accessible team sports for mixed ages and skill levels - ideal for corporate team building, hospitality activations, and family events.
Eisstock rink dimensions vary by use case. A standard competitive Eisstock rink (Eisstockbahn) is approximately 28 m long and 3 m wide. For hospitality, events, and indoor venues, Glice builds custom Eisstock rinks starting from as small as 8 m x 2 m. Every Glice Eisstock rink is built to order - dimensions, shape, and panel configuration are adapted to your available space and intended use.
No. A Glice synthetic Eisstock rink delivers authentic sliding performance without ice or refrigeration infrastructure. The engineered polymer surface works at any temperature - indoors or outdoors, in summer heat or Alpine winter. This makes synthetic Eisstock rinks a year-round alternative to traditional ice-based Eisstockbahnen, with no refrigeration-energy cost and dramatically lower maintenance.
Yes. Glice Eisstock rinks install on any flat surface - concrete, asphalt, event flooring, or grass with a sub-floor - both indoors and outdoors. The synthetic ice surface is unaffected by temperature or weather, making it ideal for outdoor Eisstock at hotel terraces, beer gardens, rooftop bars, and festivals as well as indoor Eisstock at event halls, shopping centres, and corporate venues. The rink stores flat and can be relocated seasonally.
Eisstock rink pricing depends on rink size, configuration, and whether Eisstock equipment is included. A Glice Eisstock rink requires no refrigeration plant and no rink water for resurfacing - making the total cost of ownership dramatically lower than a traditional ice Eisstockbahn. The surface lasts 10+ years per side (panels are reversible), and maintenance is limited to periodic cleaning. No technical staff needed. Contact Glice for a custom Eisstock rink quote based on your venue and dimensions.
Eisstock and Curling are both ice-based sliding games, but they differ in equipment, rules, and accessibility. Curling uses heavy granite stones (approx. 20 kg) and teams sweep the ice with brooms to guide the stone. Eisstock uses lighter stocks (4-6 kg) with a handle, stock body, and running plate - and there is no sweeping. Eisstock is simpler to learn, requires less specialised equipment, and works for all ages. A synthetic Eisstock rink also requires a smaller footprint than a Curling sheet, making it easier to install at most venues.
Yes. Every Glice Eisstock rink is modular and portable - delivered on pallets of interlocking panels that assemble in under 2 hours without tools or anchoring. This makes Glice Eisstock rinks ideal for temporary event activations, seasonal pop-ups, Christmas markets, corporate events, and touring festivals. The rink packs flat for storage and transport between locations. A permanent installation is equally straightforward.
Glice supplies complete, turnkey Eisstock rink packages worldwide - including the Swiss-engineered synthetic ice surface, professional Eisstock stones, Daube targets, and optional boards and branding. Glice Eisstock rinks are manufactured in the European Union and independently tested by Fraunhofer Institute (52% lower friction, 6% less abrasion vs. the next best competitor). Request a custom quote to get an Eisstock rink package configured for your venue, dimensions, and budget.
Yes. Glice synthetic ice Eisstock rinks are available for rent as complete turnkey packages — including the synthetic ice panels, perimeter frames, Eisstöcke (Bavarian curling sticks), and Dauben (target pucks). They rent exclusively in combination with a Glice skating rink rental.

The standard rental fleet consists of previous-generation Glice panels, refurbished and quality-checked between seasons. Brand-new rinks built on our latest panel generation — independently benchmarked by the Fraunhofer Institute — are available on request.

Demand peaks between September and January for winter and holiday installations across the DACH region and Alpine markets, and rinks are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Early booking is strongly recommended.
