The Technology

What Is a Skatemill?

A Skatemill is a stationary machine used to work on skating techniques by analyzing the mechanics of how someone skates. It provides a controlled, repeatable environment where coaches can isolate specific stride phases and identify mechanical issues that are impossible to spot during open-ice skating.

Glice’s cutting-edge Swiss-engineered Skatemill supports speeds between 3–30 km/h (1.9–19 mph) and inclinations up to 8 degrees for strength and endurance-building programs. Both forward and backward skating can be trained and analyzed.

Today, Skatemills are a core training tool at elite hockey development centers, NCAA programs, professional clubs, and ambitious private training facilities worldwide. Combined with Glice synthetic ice, they form the backbone of year-round, ice-independent hockey training.

Why the Glice Skatemill Is the Standard for Elite Training

Isolating each phase of a skater's stride on the Glice Skatemill

Isolate and Perfect Every Stride Phase

Open-ice practice can't reveal what a Skatemill can. Coaches see exactly where power leaks, where edges fail, and where milliseconds are lost — then fix them in real time, rep by rep, at precisely controlled speeds.

Build Explosive Speed and Endurance

Train at 3–30 km/h with inclines up to 8 degrees. The Skatemill builds skating-specific power and conditioning that translates directly to game performance — no ice time required.

Forward and Backward Skating Analysis

Both skating directions are fully supported. Defensemen work backward crossovers, forwards refine their acceleration — every stride is measurable, repeatable, and correctable.

Train on Glice. Perform on Ice.

Purpose-built for skate blades. The Skatemill belt and surface are engineered specifically for ice skate contact — delivering authentic resistance, glide feedback, and edge response that running treadmills cannot replicate.
Controlled, measurable training.Speed from 3–30 km/h and incline up to 8° — all adjustable via remote control. Coaches can isolate stride phases, ramp intensity, and track progress with precision impossible on open ice.
Forward and backward skating. Both skating directions are fully supported. Defensemen train backward crossovers, forwards work acceleration — every stride is repeatable and correctable.
Pairs with Glice synthetic ice.The Skatemill integrates seamlessly with Glice synthetic ice surfaces to create a complete Hockey Center — skating, shooting, and conditioning in one facility.
Compact footprint, major impact. The machine requires just 850mm depth with a 4m ceiling height. A platform or podium installation keeps the setup clean and professional — fitting into existing facilities or new builds.
Year-round, ice-independent training. No arena bookings, no ice time limits. The Skatemill runs on standard power (400V, 32A) and delivers unlimited training hours regardless of season or climate.

  • Friction measured directly on the blade
  • Normal force applied by pulling the blade head downward

Friction comparison: Glice vs competitor synthetic ice brands - 52% lower friction

52% Lower Friction

In the test, a hockey skate blade moved back and forth over a sample of synthetic ice, while a tribometer recorded how much friction each surface creates.

The coefficient of friction determines the resistance a skate blade encounters when gliding. A lower coefficient means the blade glides more effortlessly, faster, and for longer distances. It also reduces blade wear, keeping edges sharper and extending the time between resharpening.

45% Less Blade Penetration

Blade penetration (indentation) is a key factor in synthetic ice performance. The deeper the blade sinks, the more material it pushes forward - like an icebreaker through ice. This increases skating effort and reduces glide speed.

Indentation depth was measured using a white light optical profilometer. Glice shows 45% less blade sinking than the next best competitor.

Abrasion test: Glice produces 6% less material wear than the next best competitor

6% Less Abrasion

Using the standard DIN ISO 4649 method, samples from the top synthetic ice brands were tested to see how quickly they wear down. Each sample is rubbed against sandpaper under controlled conditions, and the material lost is measured.

The less material that wears off, the fewer shavings are created during skating - keeping the surface cleaner, improving glide, and reducing maintenance.
