Frequently Asked Questions

  • Set Up
    • Can I Install a Glice Rink Myself?

Installing a Glice synthetic ice rink is simple and efficient. You don’t need any special tools or prior training. For example, a fully equipped 200 m² (approx. 2,000 ft²) Glice rink can typically be installed in less than half a day.

For larger commercial projects, we can send a Glice supervisor to oversee your first installation. This service includes a complete training session for your facility staff to ensure everything runs smoothly.

    • What Kind of Floor Works Best for Synthetic Ice?

Our synthetic ice can be installed on any hard, smooth, and even surface—such as concrete, wood, sports courts, or gym floors. Just make sure the area is clean and free of debris.

For optimal performance, we recommend placing a foam layer of at least 4 mm (1/6 in) between the floor and your Glice panels. For outdoor setups, a slight incline is ideal to allow natural drainage.

    • How Are Glice Panels Joined Together?

Glice panels use a precision tongue-and-groove connection system reinforced with plugs. After extensive testing, we found this method delivers the strongest, most seamless surface possible, ensuring a stable and smooth skating experience.

    • How Do I Transport and Store My Rink?

All Glice synthetic ice systems are modular and easy to transport. We offer a range of accessories designed to help you move and store panels safely. Since the panels are extremely slippery, always secure them properly during transport.

Detailed instructions for transport, installation, and maintenance are included in the Glice Installation, Maintenance, and Operation Guide provided upon purchase or inquiry.

  • Dimensions
    • What Are the Dimensions of Glice Synthetic Ice Sheets?

Each Glice synthetic ice sheet measures 1,965 x 965 mm (approximately 77.3 x 38 inches). Panels are available in two thickness options: 20 mm (¾ inch) and 13 mm (½ inch). The 13 mm panel weighs about 24 kg (53 lbs), while the 20 mm version weighs around 39 kg (86 lbs).

    • What’s the Difference Between the 20 mm and 13 mm Panels?

The only difference between the two formats is thickness. Both are made from the same high-quality material and precision manufacturing techniques that ensure a smooth, consistent skating experience. The thicker 20 mm panel offers added durability for heavy use or larger rinks.

    • Which Thickness Should I Choose for My Installation?

Every rink setup is unique, so we recommend discussing your project with a Glice representative to find the best solution. As a general guideline, the 20 mm (¾ inch) panels can be used for any type of installation, while the 13 mm (½ inch) panels are ideal for indoor or outdoor surfaces up to about 100 m² (1,000 ft²).

  • Use and Maintenance
    • Can I Use Regular Ice Skates on Synthetic Ice?

Yes! You can use the same skates you’d wear on a traditional ice rink. Glice synthetic ice is designed to deliver a realistic glide and feel, so there’s no need for special equipment.

    • Does Synthetic Ice Damage Skate Blades?

No, synthetic ice doesn’t damage blades. However, skates may dull a bit faster than they do on real ice. To keep performance consistent, sharpen your blades regularly and correctly.

    • Can Synthetic Ice Be Used Outdoors?

Absolutely. Glice synthetic ice can be installed outdoors in any climate. To keep your rink in top condition, cover it with a tarp when it’s not in use. This helps keep the surface clean and reduces maintenance time.

    • What Happens to Synthetic Ice When It Rains or Snows?

Rain and snow won’t harm your Glice surface or affect performance. Simply remove the snow and you’re ready to skate again. Use a rubber mop to clear away snow or puddles, and a shovel or power washer with hot water for any ice buildup.

    • Do Glice Tiles Need Glide Enhancers?

No. Glice panels are auto-lubricating, meaning they maintain the perfect balance between glide and grip without any additives. For heavily used rinks, you can occasionally apply Glice Care to nourish the surface and maintain optimal performance.

    • How do you maintain a synthetic ice rink?

Maintaining Glice synthetic ice rinks is really simple. Just perform the maintenance regularly to ensure a great skating experience and impeccable looks of your Glice surface. Here’s what we recommend:

      Indoor Outdoor
Low Use Daily – Vacuum cleaning
      Weekly – Rink Polishing
      Yearly – Power washing
      Daily – Vacuum cleaning
      Biweekly – Rink Polishing
      Monthly – Power washing
Heave Use Daily – Vacuum cleaning
      2x Week – Rink Polishing
      Monthly – Power washing
      Daily – Vacuum cleaning (2x)
      Daily – Rink scrubbing
      Bi-monthly – Power washing

In general, outdoor installations need a bit more cleaning since they are exposed to more particles. We recommend covering all outdoor installations with a tarp when not in use. This will help you to get the most out of your Glice surface. For more detailed information on maintenance, please refer to our Glice Installation, Maintenance and Operation Guide, provided to you when contacting Glice.

    • Do Skates Leave Marks on Synthetic Ice?

Minor scratches and marks are completely normal and have no impact on performance. Glice panels are made from a high-density material, so any marks remain superficial and don’t require resurfacing.

    • Can Glice Panels Be Used on Both Sides?

Yes! Each Glice synthetic ice tile is double-sided, allowing you to flip and reuse it—something that sets Glice apart from many other products on the market.

  • Your Rink
    • Do You Provide Dasher Boards and Other Accessories for Synthetic Ice Rinks?

Yes. Glice offers full customization options—from surface-only setups to complete commercial rink packages. These can include dasher boards, skates, cleaning and sharpening machines, and more. If you’re operating your Glice rink commercially, we’ll supply everything you need to get started right away.

    • Can You Embed Hockey Lines in Synthetic Ice?

Yes. Our Crease Embedded Technology™ allows us to embed creases and hockey markings directly into the surface of the synthetic ice. Unlike painted lines, these markings are permanent, fade-resistant, and scratch-proof, ensuring a clean professional look that lasts.

    • Can I Add Advertising to the Dasher Boards?

Absolutely. Our dasher boards are designed with easy-to-apply advertising panels, giving you a simple way to add sponsor branding or local ads. It’s a great way to generate extra revenue alongside your ticket sales or coaching programs.

  • How and Where to Buy
    • Where Can I Purchase Glice?

You can reach out to us through our contact page or give us a call. A Glice expert will guide you through the process and help make your synthetic ice project a success. For home setups, you can order our 10 mm Glice Home panels directly from our U.S. online store.

  • Delivery
    • How Soon Can I Get My Glice Rink?

Delivery times depend on your location, order size, and customization level.

International orders: typically take at least 4 weeks.
North American orders: Glice Pads and Glice surfaces are usually delivered within about 10 days.

  • General
    • Does Synthetic Ice Wear Out?

Like any skating surface, synthetic ice will gradually wear over time. Depending on use and maintenance, 20 mm (¾ in) Glice panels last 12–20 years, while 13 mm (½ in) panels typically last 6–12 years. We back our products with a 12-year limited warranty for the 20 mm version and 6 years for the 13 mm version.

    • Why Are Some Synthetic Ice Products Cheaper Than Glice?

Not all synthetic ice is created equal. Glice uses premium-grade materials and a proprietary manufacturing process to deliver the most realistic glide, grip, and durability available. While it may not be the cheapest option, it provides the best long-term value and skating experience in its class.

Synthetic Ice Price and Cost

The cost of synthetic ice depends largely on product quality. It’s important to distinguish between price and true cost—the latter includes long-term factors like durability, maintenance, and performance. Cheaper panels may lead to higher costs from frequent skate sharpening, heavier wear, or reduced customer satisfaction.

What Is Synthetic Ice?

Synthetic ice, sometimes called artificial, plastic, or polymer ice, is a durable alternative to refrigerated ice. It’s made up of interlocking panels, joined by either a tongue-and-groove or puzzle-style system. While all synthetic ice serves the same purpose, manufacturing quality and performance can vary significantly between brands.

Reviews

Before choosing a synthetic ice product, it’s worth taking time to compare and review the options available. Look closely at factors such as glide quality, surface durability, and how much shaving or flaking occurs during use. You should also consider how often skate blades need sharpening, as this reflects the overall performance of the surface.
